Cesarean sections are the most commonly performed surgery in the United States.
Nearly one-third of all births are by cesarean section. These surgeries leave scars- both visible and invisible.
“Our Cesarean Scars” is a collection centering the experiences of women and birthing people. This collection mentions experiences of miscarriage, infertility, postpartum depression and anxiety, domestic violence, birth trauma, and coercion and abuse by medical providers.
Through photographs and written word, this collection explores how our scars change over time and the meaning we make of them.
We’ve asked the questions:
“Does the imagery that currently exists reflect how Cesarean scars change and heal over time?”
“Do current narratives reflect the relationships we have with Our Cesarean Scars?
